One of the infrastructure improvements of the future that many are working towards in the U.S. is the “Smart Grid.”

For those just starting to hear about this concept, Wikipedia offers this concise explanation:  “A smart grid delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using digital technology to save energy, reduce cost and increase reliability.”

Our current grid, for all of its success and years of service, has its limitations and downsides in this modern age of global demand and challenges.  As the U.S. Department of Energy said in an introductory report on the Smart Grid, “It is a colossal task.  But it is a task that must be done.”

To help explain this new infrastructure approach to energy usage and delivery, let me point you to the DOE’s online report:  “The Smart Grid:  An Introduction.”

It is available from their website along with a host of other outstanding information on this topic at:  http://www.oe.energy.gov/smartgrid.htm

Looking towards the infrastructure challenges of the future in St. Charles County --- everything from transportation and natural resources to energy --- we hope you will pass along your suggestions, questions, and insights.
