Insulated But Not Immune PDF Print E-mail

That’s one way to understand how St. Charles County is doing in the midst of the global, economic slowdown.

We are insulated but not immune. From housing starts and employment levels to consumer spending and industrial production, St. Charles County is doing better than many other parts of the U.S. as we all weather these difficult times together.

Some may try to take a Pollyanna-ish approach and others may fixate on the negative, but I believe St. Charles County has the ability to endure and come through this period stronger and better as a result.

Our area has gone through hard times before.  There have been floods before.  There have been major layoffs before.  There have been seismic shifts in industry before.  We survived and prospered then and we can do it again.  We learned valuable lessons and we moved forward for the good of the community, the good of our neighbors, the good of our children’s future.

This is such a time.

That is why I am so proud of the EDC board and staff for taking a proactive approach and looking for ways to have an impact on the local economy.  Federal and state assistance can be a good thing, but we also need to look to our own local resources and ingenuity to find real world solutions that are right for our local community.

Now is the perfect time to revisit our approach to job creation and retention, housing growth, infrastructure investment, and sustainability issues.

At our Jobs Now Summit on March 24, 2009, we will be unveiling a number of EDC initiatives to help the local business community through the services that we currently offer.  We also have a number of community initiatives we would like to suggest for consideration.

At the same time, we are open to suggestions and feedback from every quarter.  If you live and work and play in St. Charles County and have a constructive idea on the local economy, we want to hear from you.  And if you aren’t a part of our vibrant community, we encourage you to come visit, and we are still more than interested to hear about what is working in other parts of the country and around the world.

We look forward to opening this new dialogue with all of you for the betterment of our community, region, and beyond!
